ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS ? Maintains grounds in City parks, ball field complexes, cemetery, and public green spaces ? Performs minor preventative maintenance work on structures, buildings and equipment ? Performs proper maintenance and care of City street and park trees ? Actively participates and abides by City sponsored education, training and safety programs ? Performs all other duties assigned ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES ? Maintains safe public use areas by removing snow, ice, debris, and other potential hazards ? Assists with emergency maintenance and repair ? Stays current on skills, keeps abreast of new technology, adapts to City and industry changes ? Attends and participates in training, departmental staff meetings and seminars ? Experience:
No experience required, however, prefer at least one (1) year of landscape, horticulture or similar work experience and/or education.
Employee is expected to perform the job satisfactorily in accordance with the adopted personnel policies of the City.
Education:
A high school diploma or GED is required.
Technical Skills:
Knowledge of equipment operation, maintenance, and proper use of departmental tools and equipment is required.
Laborer must be able to safely operate all departmental equipment.
Completion of Kansas Arborist Training course within one (1) year of employment preferred.
Employee is encouraged to obtain and maintain a valid CDL within one (1) year of employment.
Problem Solving:
Moderate problem solving is involved in this position.
Decision Making:
Moderate decision making is involved in this position.
Supervision:
This position receives supervision from the Department Head and, subsequently, by the Department Foreman.
As needed, employee may receive occasional directives from Grounds Maintenance Technicians.
Position does not require any supervisory duties.
Financial Accountability:
Employee has direct control over departmental equipment but does not participate directly in the annual departmental budget process.
Personal Relations:
Daily contact with the general public, co-workers and supervisors.
Infrequent contact with the Director of Operations and City Manager is expected.
Working Environment:
Works primarily 80% of the time outside year round in all climate conditions, exposure to all types of weather including adverse conditions may be expected.
Employee is exposed to excessive noise, heights, pesticides, and other seasonal landscaping chemicals.
Physical Demands:
Must have sufficient strength and dexterity to operate required tools and power equipment including:
mowers, weed-eaters, chainsaws, leaf-blowers, snow removal equipment, etc.
Employee performs manual labor including:
digging, bending, ladder climbing, standing, walking, and carrying heavy loads.
Employee must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
Work Hours:
Primary working hours are Monday through Friday 7:
00am - 4:
00pm (full-time 40 hours per week.
) Hours may vary depending upon department/City needs and adjustments are made to the schedule to accommodate these demands when necessary.
The employee may be asked to work occasional evenings, weekends, holiday hours, and is subject to emergency call outs that may occur.
